Pencil Skirts: The Hottest Shape For The New Season

Feb 20 2018by Kate Russell

One of the latest fashion trends to come out of Spring/Summer ’18 fashion week was pencil skirts. Naturally the skirt of the workplace, due to their chic and demure nature, the pencil skirt is having a revolution and here at Modisme, we’re loving it.

No longer in basic black and paired with a simple white shirt, the pencil skirt is coming for spring and we’re going to be rocking it in a whole new way. Fabrics are varied and looks go from metallic leopard prints to minimalistic and bold. Lengths are generally slightly longer, which is perfect for the modest dresser. So, get ready to top up your modest wardrobe this spring with colour, added details and high-waisted super-chic style.

From Balenciaga to Fendi, the fashion week runways were blanketed in pencil skirts, giving us the ultimate in style inspiration. In terms of modest looks, the longline skirts were paired with oversized and slouchy tops and knits for an elegant combination. Skirts fitted slightly looser and were often paired with a chic and sharp pointed heel.

We’ve also seen endless looks in terms of street style featuring the pencil skirt. These looks are often more daytime, losing the pointed heel and opting for chunky platform trainers or simple block-heeled ankle boots. Always, the upper half is bulky and layering is key. The new pencil skirt is versatile and easy to mix and match, even with a bold colour or strong print. One day pair it with a rock and roll t-shirt and trainers, the next throw on stilettos and a Burberry sweater, complete with diamond jewellery.

Our Modisme stylists have taken a look through some of the hottest pencil skirts available right now and curated their top 5 looks to wear this ultra-stylish trend. With so many versatile options on offer, the pencil skirt is bound to be the hit of the summer fashion season.

Bold Fabrics

Go bold and rock this trend with confidence by opting for a stand-out fabric or print. By juxtaposing the print with a simple camisole and jacket, like this NO 21 skirt and pretty blouse, or clashing with a graphic tee and cardigan, the wearability options are endless. The print and embroidery on this hot pink Gucci skirt commands attention or go slightly more casual with this slouchy and oh-so-comfy knitted version from Burberry.

Pencil skirt shapes can work for most body types and are a fundamental look for the new season. Apple shaped ladies need to opt for a lower waist line and rectangles choose a more fitted or tapered shape towards the knee to add some curve.
